CHAPTER 9

Belle

Belle wasn’t one to panic often, but when Nathaniel passed out after drinking whatever water he ingested, she couldn’t think straight. Her first instinct was to shift into her wolf form and carry him as fast as possible to the only healer she knew she could trust.

Marian.

Before long, Belle found herself shrinking in her chair as Marian sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her brother lying unconscious with a wet rag resting on his forehead. As much as she wanted to, Belle couldn’t bring herself to approach. She had no idea what was going through her friend’s mind, but she wouldn’t blame her for being upset. Belle had omitted the truth, and that was just as bad as a lie. A million apologies rushed through Belle’s mind, but she didn’t dare say a word.

Nathaniel was burning up with fever, and despite the cream Marian had been rubbing on his chest for hours, he still hadn’t woken up.

There was so much Belle wanted to say, but she lost all courage to speak. She should’ve told Marian about Nathaniel. Even with all the reasons she had not to, none of it mattered when she saw her friend’s eyes fill with tears.

“What happened to him?” Marian asked, her voice soft in the candlelit room.

Belle rose to her feet and took a hesitant step forward. She had already told Marian about the Reditus Cave, and the water that was supposed to have given him his memories back. But if she wanted to hear it all again, it was the least Belle could do.

Belle cleared her throat, then told Marian everything once more. Except for when he went down the cage. Belle couldn’t see exactly what had happened down below, she could only hear the conversation they had, but he seemed fine when he came back up.

“Did you bring a sample of that water with you?” Marian asked, turning to look at Belle for the first time since they’d arrived.

Belle took another step forward. “I’m so sorry, Marian—”

“Just answer the question, Belle.”

“I already told you, I didn’t get a sample,” Belle replied. “And I’m sorry. I am so deeply sorry I kept this from you.”

Marian rose to her feet with a scowl. “You should have told me.”

“I know.” Belle frowned. “And believe me, I wanted to. I even asked him. But he was afraid it would be too overwhelming.” And she was also afraid that Marian had helped lock him up, but Belle kept that to herself. Judging by how relieved she was to see him, it was clear that Marian had nothing to do with that wicked scheme.

“Afraid it would be too overwhelming?” Marian repeated in disbelief. “I’m his sister.”

“Who he didn’t remember,” Belle reasoned. “Please, Marian. Don’t take this personally. I’m sure that if he remembered you, he wouldn’t have hesitated. And neither would I. Please, forgive me.”

Marian took a blood sample from her brother’s arm, then walked across the room to a pot on the stove. “I just want to know what was in that blazing water.
